Shaila’s Weblog

After playing many versions of the card games, I have become a regular card player. It has become a hobby for me to check the latest card games and try my luck playing them. This way I get to know the game also and some times while playing for cash I earn some money too. Last week a friend of mine came to me and asked me how I rate myself as a card game expert and I said I can give me 7 out of 10…. He quizzed me on various rules of the different card game variants and to my surprise I responded him all the correct answers and he said you underestimated your skills.

He offered me a job ( work from home) to write reviews on a gaming review portal. The money was good so I readily agreed to his offer. For 1 year I have worked for the review site playing many many card and different genres of the game. Now I can say that I have learned a lot with this job and it has helped me to hone my skill as a player too.

Out of the many genres of the games, I still like Card games as first love remains first whatever happens… it never changes and so as my love for the card games. I am playing rummy games online on an Indian website now a days and found that this 13 cards version of rummy is so exciting. The website claims to be a premium skill game site in India catering to rummy card players who play on the site for practice and cash tourneys. I have won around 10K this week playing rummy for cash using my game skills. The most fascinating experience on the site was that all the tables were almost full and many players are formidable ones but still my experience with the review site yielded and I won games five times in a week.

Someone has rightly said that no work is small and whatever you do you will reap the fruit of your hard work. So the moral of the post is keep working and utilize your experience and skills for your own good:)

When I was getting bored playing candy crush on my Android HTC handset, I thought I should check new free apps to download and play on my phone. The day was good as the Internet speed was excellent to download the Games on my phone. I searched free apps on Google Playstore and found a collection of gaming apps…. the Apps which draw my attention were Teen Patti Apps from Junglee Games and Octro Inc. I downloaded both the apps to learn this game. I found Junglee Teen Patti App way better than the Octro version of the game. The basic different was of the game play features on which Junglee Teenpatti was way ahead and provided a very good gaming experience. I played the game on day one and then got engrossed in some other work. On day two, I got a missing you message from the App and gave me bonus chips to play on day two. I loved it, it was amazing and I started playing the game again. It was quick and easy game to play and you must try this amazing Teen Patti App on your android phone.

More than a rainy-day past time, playing card games is a great way for families to bond. It provides hours of non-stop entertainment for all age group players.  A deck of rummy cards can go a long way towards family fun so refresh your memory on these classic rummy games and discover a new game to play in the family tonight!

Swedish Rummy

This card game is more popularly known as “Crazy Eights” and “Stops game”, because in this rummy game players can be stopped from discarding if they don’t have an appropriate card. The objective of the game is to get rid of all the cards in hand. The Swedish rummy is fast paced game of luck and skills and can be played between two or more players. The fun part of the game is that all the eights are wild cards.

How to play Swedish Rummy

  • Choose a dealer: The dealer will hand out seven or five cards to each player depending upon the number of players in the game. If players are more than two than usually five cards are dealt to each player.
  • Rest of the cards are placed in the middle of the playing arena, faced down. The top card of the pile is faced up so as to start the discard pile. The game play moves clockwise to the dealer. The player to the left of the dealer, goes first.
  • When it is a player’s turn, he or she adds to the discard pile by playing a card that matches the top card that is in discard pile. This can be done with either a matching the suit or the rank such as a jack or a nine.
  • If a player cannot match the top card that is laid out on the discard pile by suit or by rank, he or she must draw cards from the stack until he or she can play one that matches the card facing up.
  • If there are no more cards in the draw pile, simply use the ones in the pile you have been stacking up. Shuffle them well so as there will be no particular order.
  • The first player to discard all of his cards wins.
  • The game can keep going if the Winner wants to let others play until only the last person has cards in his or her hand.

Indian Rummy

Indian rummy or paplu is another variation of rummy that is popular in the Indian continent. In Indian rummy each player play the game with 13 cards therefore it is also called as 13 cards Indian rummy game. This game is played between 2 to 6 players therefore if the players are more than two deck of cards are required with jokers.

How to play Indian Rummy

  • First, A set of 13 cards is dealt to each player in no particular order
  • Cards in each suit rank, from low to high: Ace 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 Jack Queen King. Ace is also considered as Face card, In case of face cards, it gets similar points as king and queen.
  • Objective of the game is to arrange all 13 cards in-hand in sequences and/or sets of 3,3,3 and 4 cards.
  • At the start of the game, one player selects a card out of the stock. This card determines an additional set of jokers for that hand as below:
    • Card of same rank of any color. or
    • Card of same rank but of opposite color known as opposite joker. or
    • The next higher card of the same suit called as “paplu”. This card functions as a wild card joker, but the holder is awarded an  additional bonus from each player at the end of the round.
  • Every player picks/discards a card from the additional closed/open deck to complete sets and/or sequences turn by turn.
  • The player needs to show the cards in hand by grouping them in sets/sequences to declare.
  • In order to finish the game, the player needs to declare at least two sequences, of which one must be a pure sequence.

Here is a site where you can play and practice rummy games popular in India.

Gin Rummy

Gin rummy is a fast rummy game played between two players.  Gin rummy is played with a standard deck of 52 cards with Cards rank, from low to high: Ace 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 Jack Queen King.

How To Play Gin Rummy

The objective of the game is to collect sets (three or four of a kind, or three or more consecutive cards of the same suit) to earn agreed number of points before the opponent.

  • First a dealer is randomly chosen to deal the first round and after that usually the winner of each round deals the next. The dealer shuffles the deck and deal 10 cards each. The twenty-first card is turned face up to start the discard pile and the remaining of the cards are placed face down beside it to form the draw pile.
  • A typical turn comprises of two parts,
One, player must take a card, either the top card from draw or from discard pile.
two, player must discard a card faced up onto the top of discard pile.
  • For the very first turn of the hand, the player who did not deal chooses whether or not to take the first faced up card. If that player declines, the dealer may take the card. If both refuses to take the faced up card, the non-dealer draws the top card from the draw pile.
  • Play can end “knock” the play at his turn if, after drawing a card, he can form adequate sets, discard one card, and have 10 points or fewer (of unmatched cards or deadwood) remaining in his hand.
  • Ending the play in this way is called as knocking. Knocking with no unmatched cards at all is called going gin, and earns a special bonus.
  • A player who can meet the requirement of not more than 10 deadwood can knock on any turn, including the first. A player is never forced to knock if able to, but may choose instead to carry on playing, to try to get a better score.
  • If a player goes gin, the opponent is not allowed to lay off any cards.
  • The knocker is never allowed to lay off cards on the opponent’s sets or runs.
  • The play also ends if the stock pile is reduced to two cards, and the player who took the third last card discards without knocking. In this case the hand is cancelled, there is no score, and the same dealer deals again.
  • Each player calculates the value of their unmatched cards. If the knocker’s count is lower, he scores the difference between the two counts.
  • If the knocker did not go gin, and the values are equal — or the knocker’s value is greater than his opponent’s — then the knocker has been undercut. The knocker’s opponent scores 10 points plus the difference between the values.

Turns are played until one player’s cumulative score reaches 100 points or more. That player is the winner.

There are many variations of Gin Rummy. one is Straight gin in which knocking is not allowed. so players are required to play till gin. second is Oklahama gin  in which the value of the first upcard is used to determine the maximum count at which players can knock. Face cards count as 10; aces count as 0 (no knocking allowed, players must play for gin). If the upcard is a spade, the hand will count double. The target score for winning Oklahoma gin is generally set at 150 rather than 100. Some play that if an ace is turned up you may only knock if you can go gin. In Hollywood gin, scoring is kept for three different games at the same time. A player’s first win will be recorded in extra box in Game One. A player’s second win will be recorded in their extra boxes for both Game One and Game Two. Their third win will be recorded in their extra boxes for all three games.
Hands are played until all three games are finished.

Apart from the above mentioned games there are many others; a few of them are Bing, Canasta rummy, Robbers, Rummy 500, Kalooki, Panguingue etc. I will try to compile them in different posts of rummy category, hope my passion for card games will help some of the families to enjoy some fun time playing cards in their home.

Being active in a fun way is what Mud running races are all about. I have had a chance to participate in wacky world mud running event and believe me its the most enthralling and funny race that I have ever participated.

Running and playing in the mud might pick interest of some fitness runners but it also fascinates fun and challenge loving people like me who are drawn in for the physical and mental challenges that the mud racing offers especially the obstacles that comes during the race.

I have participated in a 5k long course racing with a few of my friends. we scaled walls, crawled through the narrow tubes and went under wires and it was so much fun agile way to keep yourself fit that you can realize only when you participate in the race.

mud racing

The second part of the race was also great which was basically an after-race party event. Here’s once advice for the first time participants, pls do carry one pair of additional cloths unless you don’t mind attending the party doused in mud. Delicious Food, beverages, rides, live bands and unlimited pint of beers with friends, there was all the things that kicked off one of a kind celebration.

Thanks to the recession, we were spending our so called quality time at home on weekends since last two months. Now as Albert, got his new job, he remain busy most of the time catching up with the new responsibilities. I also understand this and gave him six months for aligning his work and home balance up to average American standards.

But this post is about when we were together spending some quality time at home watching movies and playing cards. I remember my grand mother, she used to play combing card games with her coterie of old ladies. They usually gather very often during noon hours and for playing canasta rummy and gossiping about their entire circle and more often about our society scandals. As I was a teenager and had little knowledge of combining card games, I used to think that this is definitely not my type of game and not meant for me.

Years passed, Grand Maa went away, I got married with Albert and left the job after John came in our life. And one fine day when I was getting bored at home, I happen to came across a free rummy web portal and I thought I should give it a shot and know what after sometime I got addicted to play this game. I told Albert about it and we played it at home once, and then the other weekend and so on. An average game for us used to take five hands that would run for around 90 minutes. One game and another and another, we played the canasta like anything and now we remember our time playing cards and having some good quality time at home.  I am writing this post as that their was a change in my thought for the game, earlier I used to think that it is just meant for olds and now we are loving it.

Here I am trying to build a community of online rummy aficionados with whom I can play, interact and host local rummy tournaments.

Winner Update:

One lucky champ has emailed about his winnings. Congratulations Mr. shamim sheikh on winning the qualifier rummy game tourney for the wrt event 2014. we wish you all the best for your endeavours and all the luck for the final event.

Here is the post dedicated to the most played card game in our household parties that is Rummy. I remember from childhood, whenever our all kins gather in a family get together, we used to play rummy in the night and it was fun playing rummy and tambola, while eating some home made snacks and enjoying the thrill of the game.

My Mom has been playing Rummy from quite a long time as she is regular member of the colony kiti parties. So thats how I learned playing rummy right from childhood. Now, whenever we get free and through a party on weekends with friends we play rummy just for fun and excitement and when we win the money, that goes back again into the party. 🙂

From quite sometime now, John and I came to know about online rummy websites in India but I haven’t had a time to look upon and play on those portals. There were many, to name a few sites such as classic rummy, Junglee rummy, rummy circle and many more. Basically they are running skill games on their websites and earn by getting certain amount as rack. Not a bad idea to play rummy online just for thrill and excel our skills that can be used in the parties. However, these websites not only offer games but conduct rummy tournaments as well. I have recently came across one google Ad about World Rummy Tournament. Well one of the famous lottery brand in India, PlayWin is conducting a World Rummy Tournament which is sponsored by an online rummy website

World Rummy Tournament

Earlier, I was reluctant to check that Ad. Yesterday only when I clicked the Ad, I came to know about the details and amount of prizes thats been on offer in the tournament. Its a huge prize pool of Rs. 1 Crore thats too the company is claiming is Guaranteed. The main fascinating thing about the event is that they are conducting the event on a Cruize Ship sailing from Malaysia and Thailand. I love to visit Malaysia and Thailand whenever we get some bonuses and once every two years we visit Malaysia or Singapore. So far we have travelled Five South Asian countries and the experience was awesome.

I thought I should give it a try and started searching for details about the rummy tournament by Playwin. Then I came to know that they are two ways to get into the tournament. One is to get the direct tickets from their World Rummy Tournament portal dedicated for sailing WRT tickets online and Second way is to play rummy qualifier games on their website and compete with other rummy players. Since the ticket cost was bit higher for my budget ( it was costing around 1.2 lakh Indian Rupees) though. therefore, I started playing for the online qualifier tournaments, being held on and crossed stageII level of the tournament. I am still playing for the final round and hopefully I may make it upto the final event.

The experience of play online is in itself very much exciting because  its like a war with your friends and other competitors to secure your tickets for the final. I am relishing it at the moment, the website also props up by giving bonuses from time to time that keeps me stick to the game and hone my skill for the final event.

I will post my experiences on  a later date once I got selected for the final event. till then good buy guys.. write to you soon.

P.S. For all my friends, try this World Rummy Tournament Qualifier once, We don’t know we may sail together from Malaysia to Thialand. Keeping Play and have fun. … Shaila

PHP: Hypertext Preprocessor is a widely used, general-purpose scripting language that was originally designed for web development to produce dynamic web pages. For this purpose, PHP code is embedded into the HTML source document and interpreted by a web server with a PHP processor module, which generates the web page document.

Like so many things in the programmers tool kit, PHP has developed almost accidentally. What started as one person’s experiment with scripting, managed to fulfil a need for many other programmers, a need for a small, fast and simple scripting language that could work seamlessly with many other components. In the last three years PHP has grown to become a major player in the server side scripting market.

Recently, another acronym was coined, LAMP, standing for Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP – now considered an important package in the Internet world, a set of programs that work together to produce dynamic, data-driven Web sites.

As a general-purpose programming language, PHP code is processed by an interpreter application in command-line  mode performing desired operating system operations and producing program output on its standard output channel. It may also function as a graphical application. PHP is available as a processor for most modern web servers and as a standalone interpreter on most operating systems and computing platforms.

Isn’t it surprising that the population of Panthera tigris in India, widely known as the land of tiger is decreasing at such an alarming rate that has led to the  fear of extinction of this glorious  national animal from India.  Famous for its grace, strength, agility and enormous power, this lord of the jungle is in extreme threat of extinction.

Due to illegal smuggling of Tiger Skin and other body parts, there are very few tigers left in the world today. According to the World Census of Tigers, there are only 5000 -7000 tigers in the world today.  Out of which, Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, China and Myanmar claim to have a population of 3000 to 4500 and India alone claims to have a population of 2500 to 3750. However, a 2008 census held by Government of India revealed that the tiger population had dropped to 1,411. What started as a Royal Sport during the olden times is now a target of Poaching and Depleting Habitat. Our National Animal is fighting for its life!

The population of tiger is not only decreasing because of illegal poaching but also because of continuous shrinking of its natural habitat. If we don’t act now, we’ll loose this beautiful heritage from us. The questions is what we can do??? and How we can save the tiger???

Every little bit helps. You can speak up about the cause. You can write or blog about our tigers. Even staying up-to-date with tiger facts like knowledge of tiger sanctuaries, their population, news updates, etc. helps. You can also donate money to NGOs working for the cause, like WWF-India.

Tiger Facts

  • From around 40,000 tigers at the turn of the last century, there are just 1411 tigers left in India.
  • 2009 was the worst year for tigers in India, with 86 deaths reported.
  • There are 37 Tiger sanctuaries in India. However, 17 sanctuaries are on the verge of losing their tiger population.
  • Corbett National Park is the oldest tiger park in India. It was created in 1936 as ‘Hailey National Park’.  The Kanha National Park’s lush sal and bamboo forests, grassy meadows and ravines provided inspiration to Rudyard Kipling for his famous novel, The Jungle Book.

Legal highs or Legal intoxicants are intoxicating drugs which are not prohibited by the United Nations Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs and which people who are seeking intoxication use. This is merely the definition of these killer stimulants which are legal available across the world spreading like wild fire over the internet.

Until now they were used read “misused or abused” by thousands of stimulant seekers and high snorters, ignorant people who are looking for herbal / legal supplements to get the artificial highs, weight reduction and other feelings of pseudo hallucination. Its a irony that despite of stringent drug control measures in almost all countries, these drugs are rampantly available to people at drug stores, head shops, shops selling smoking paraphernalia and alternative stuffs.

I don’t simply understand why government allows such vendors to establish and sell these herbal /legal highs over the counter, I guess the law enforcements agencies are also on a “high” forgetting their primary focus of eradicating such wreck stuff from the society. Here is the latest story I read in daily mail UK:

The bride killed by bath salts – the new ‘legal high’ Ivory Wave drug that’s sweeping Britain

Barely a year ago, Sarah Forsyth walked down the aisle in an ivory wedding dress.

‘She was beautiful and so happy then,’ says her mother Margaret Moyle, slowly turning the pages of the wedding album. ‘She will be wearing that dress for her funeral.’

Sarah, 35, died a week ago today, after falling into a coma. Her parents are in no doubt as to what killed her.

Since October last year, she had been regularly buying and using a legal substance called Ivory Wave. And although the coroner is yet to record his verdict, the Moyles lay the blame for her death firmly at the drug’s door.

They insist the powerful powder-form legal drug, sold in £15, 500mg bags on the internet and over the counter in specialist herbal shops, destroyed Sarah’s mental and physical health with terrifying speed.

They are convinced it caused severe swelling and irreparable damage to her brain and raised her heart rate to such a level that when she was taken off life-support it gave up under the strain.

Sarah first bought the drug ten months ago after she read on an online forum that it could help with weight loss.

Just two weeks ago, the drug – also known as Ivory Coast, Purple Wave or Vanilla Sky – was linked to the death of a young man in the Isle of Wight and in recent months has hospitalised dozens more.

Ivory Wave is marketed as bath salts or plant food and is labelled ‘not for human consumption’ to circumvent strict laws governing the supply of pharmaceuticals in Britain.

But the substance’s true purpose is not a secret online, where news and reviews of readily available legal highs spread quickly on dedicated internet forums.

Drug experts and doctors are hugely concerned – they now believe the substance, which is either ingested orally or snorted, is potentially more dangerous than Meow Meow, the previously legal high which was banned in April after officials identified 26 cases where it may have been a contributing cause of death.

There is little or no information available about exactly how many people are taking Ivory Wave, how the drug is made or what it contains. The manufacturers do not publish a list of ingredients.

‘I honestly don’t think Sarah had a clue what she was getting herself into when she bought it,’ says Margaret, 60. ‘To my knowledge, she had never been a drug user.

'Legal high': Ivory Wave is sold in £15, 500mg bags on the internet‘Legal high’: Ivory Wave is sold in £15, 500mg bags on the internet

‘As far as I knew, she just wanted something to help her lose a few pounds and, stupidly perhaps, she got this stuff she’d seen on the internet.

‘It got hold of her so quickly. She was in its grip.’

Within months of taking her first hit, their happy, healthy, newlywed daughter had become a paranoid, aggressive agoraphobic, insomniac. She dropped from a size 16 to a size six.

Soon, it was too late for their daughter – and Margaret and her husband Robin, a 65-year-old retired school caretaker, had no idea of the havoc that Ivory Wave was causing elsewhere in the country.

‘When Sarah first fell into a coma even her doctors had never heard of the stuff,’ says Margaret.

But that has changed now. Exactly a week before Sarah’s death – as her parents and her husband Jim kept a hopeful vigil by her hospital bedside – the body of 24-year- old chef and regular Ivory Wave-user, Michael Bishton, was hauled out of the sea by fishermen off the coast of the Isle of Wight.

He is thought to have jumped or fallen from a clifftop on the east side of the island while high on Ivory Wave. He died from his injuries, rather than from the effects of the drug. But his was the first death to be linked to its use.

His mother and girlfriend both say he had become deeply disturbed since first taking the drug, suffering severe paranoia and hallucinations.

Meanwhile, A&E departments from Scotland to Dorset have reported a sudden surge of admissions suffering from the effects of Ivory Wave.

There were 20 recent A&E admissions in lothian, Scotland, and 12 in Cumbria, where several patients were suffering such acute and long-lasting paranoid psychosis after taking it that they had to be completely sedated before they could be treated.

The drug is also known to raise the heart rate and blood pressure to dangerous levels and cause kidney failure, seizures, muscle damage and loss of bowel control.

Every A&E department in England has now been sent an alert about it and the chief medical officers in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland have issued similar warnings.

At home in Braintree, Essex, Margaret and Robin want some good to come from their terrible loss.

‘This stuff comes with no warning, no ingredients list, no dosage advice,’ says Margaret, who works as a school cleaner and exam invigilator.

‘It’s legal and it’s advertised as all sorts of things, from plant food, to bath salts. The truth is, it’s a dangerous drug. It destroyed our beautiful daughter.’

Looking at Sarah’s wedding photographs is especially painful, because they know it was seeing these pictures that made her so determined to lose weight in the first place.

‘Sarah had suffered from depression for a while and then, about three years ago, she was diagnosed with diabetes,’ explains Margaret.

‘The combination of anti-depressants and insulin made her put on weight and she felt very self-conscious.’

She describes Sarah as ‘vulnerable’ and says that as a teenager she had been anorexic for a time.

‘Not being in control of her weight really troubled her. When she saw her wedding pictures she kept saying: “oh god, I look so fat.” I said she looked beautiful in those pictures. She really did. But she wouldn’t hear it.’

In October, Sarah told her parents and her husband Jim, a 46-year-old transport worker, that she was taking a diet aid that she’d bought online.

‘She didn’t think there was anything dodgy about it, so she was quite open with us about taking it at first. We thought it was legitimate and I think she did too.

‘I was shocked at the sight of her when she was at her thinnest. I said: “Darling, you’re too thin now. You’re taking it too far. Stop.” Then we realised that she’d become dependent on this stuff.’

At around the same time, Margaret realised that Sarah was not ingesting her ‘slimming aid’ but snorting it like cocaine.

‘I was horrified and said: “It can’t be natural if that’s the way you’re taking it. It sounds like drugs.” She said: “No Mum, it’s just the quickest way to get it into your system.”

‘We begged her to stop – her brother even said she was going to kill herself if she wasn’t careful – but we couldn’t watch her all the time. She was a grown woman and whenever we weren’t there she bought the stuff with her credit card and took it.

‘I asked her several times if she knew what was in it. She didn’t seem too sure, but she said it was all totally legal and above board.
